Pakistan Biomass Raw Material & Biomass Pellet Energy Support Policies

Agricultural Biomass (Straw & Agro By-products – Core Feedstock for Pellet Factories)

Pakistan generates around 40 million tons of crop residues annually. The major supply bases are Punjab > Sindh. Agricultural residues serve as the primary raw material for biomass pellets.

  • Wheat Straw: The highest-volume residue, widely available across Punjab. Harvest season falls between April and May. A large portion was traditionally burned in open fields, contributing to heavy smog.
  • Rice Straw: Concentrated in central Punjab and northern Sindh rice belts such as Badin. Annual output reaches approximately 16 million tons, with about 60% previously burnt on-site. Rice husks collected from rice mills are easy to gather and ideal for pelletizing.
  • Sugarcane Bagasse: Produced in southern Punjab and Sindh sugar zones. Most bagasse is consumed on-site by sugar mill boilers. Only limited surplus can be sold for pellet production.
  • Cotton Stalk: Mainly from southern Punjab and Sindh cotton regions, annual output 6–8 million tons. It has good calorific value yet high baling and collection difficulty, holding great potential as pellet feedstock.
  • Corn Stover: Scattered in Punjab and northern KPK, with lower volume than wheat and rice residues.

  • Recommended Locations for Biomass Pellet Plants

  • ✅ Top Choice: Punjab (Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Kamalia) Abundant wheat, rice and cotton straw. Dense industrial demand from textile mills, brick kilns and food processing factories. ✅ Secondary Option: Northern Sindh cotton & rice zones (Badin, Hyderabad) ⚠️ KPK has rich wood residues but smaller local industrial markets and expensive transport. Balochistan’s scattered raw materials are not fit for large pellet factories.
